Teach Your Children

Thursday, May 15th

By and large, parents regard it their responsibility to educate their children. Most parents therefore insure that their children are in school. But why do parents neglect the religious training of their children? God gives us specific directions. "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons" (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

For one thing, a lot of parents reject the God of the Bible. So you can expect these fathers and mothers will make a conscious effort to exclude their children from any traditional Christian training. If this is the case in your household, I call upon you to repent and change your mind about your Creator. You need to seek the forgiveness of the Living God. You need to trust in the sacrifice of Christ as the only adequate payment for your sins, errors, mistakes, and rebellion. You need to encourage your children to do the same.

On the other hand, you may neglect the religious training of your children because you are at a loss as to what to teach them and how to teach them. First of all, you need to teach your children about God and His works of creation. You need to teach them, from the Bible, how God created you and them and how the first man and woman fell into sin. You need to teach your children about Christ, who He is, how His death pays for sin, and why His resurrection takes men, women and children into heaven. Not only so, you need to encourage your children to believe God and to trust in Christ for their own personal salvation.

All of this takes time and requires some preparation. But the rewards are great.
