The Power of the Bible
Friday, May 16th
Book reviews are a fact of life. For example, professional periodicals point the way by directing their readers to good books and steering them away from the bad. But have you ever read a review of the book that tops the best seller list year after year?
The Bible does top the best seller list annually. But why do the reviewers ignore it? Perhaps it is because the Bible is so old. It's been read by a lot of people! Or perhaps it is because the Bible is controversial. Some say it's just like any other book! So why bother with it? Others say it is a mixture of God's words and the words of men. Still others argue that although the Bible cannot be God's word, it can still contain God's word. Figure that out if you can.
The problem is, all these opinions are contrary to the historic Christian faith based upon the teachings of the Bible itself. 2 Peter 1:20-21 say, "No prophecy of Scripture was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." In other words, different men didn't decide certain books and letters should be written to form what we now call the Bible. Not at all. God initiated what is found in the Bible. And so, when you read the Bible, God is speaking to you. In addition, the authority of God stands behind the Words of the Bible. This means that the Bible is a powerful book. It is a book you should read and to which you should give your undivided attention. Reading this book brings you face to face with God. It can change your life.
