Humility, the Path to Strength

Thursday, May 22nd

Most men don't like to wear an apron. Why? Because aprons are worn by servants. We would rather not be servants. We would rather be among those who are served. Why is this true? Well, some folks are simply too proud to be servants. They'd rather have jobs which give them a position which others look up to.

Perhaps this is why a lot of people reject Christ and the work He came to do in this world. Jesus said of Himself, "The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). Yes, Jesus Christ came into the world to be a servant. He came to die on a cross to pay the penalty due to others for their sin. The Bible says, "Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:8).

This is truly amazing. The work of the very Son of God in this world was characterized by a servant attitude, by obedience and humility. Although these are characteristics too often rejected by men and women, they shouldn't be. You see, the Bible says, "Clothe yourselves with humility toward on another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5).

The point is this. Humility means depending upon God for everything. It is the opposite of pride. Pride depends upon itself for everything. But God wants you to depend upon Him. He wants you to trust Him. And when you do, He gives you inner strength. That's what grace is. It's power for living.
