Stumbling Over Christ
Saturday, May 24th
Have you ever stubbed your toe and them madly hopped around? Or maybe you have stumbled while running across gravel. It's no fun picking gravel out of skinned hands and knees and elbows. But do you know something? A stubbed toe or skinned hands and knees don't hold a candle to what you will experience if you stumble over Christ. What does it mean to stumble over Christ?
Well, the Bible pictures Christ as a stone, like the stone of a building. You can do one of two things with Christ. You can build your life upon Him, using Him as your foundation. Or you can reject Christ and attempt to build a life for yourself without Him.
Now God the Father says, "Behold I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a costly corner stone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in Him will not be disturbed" (Isaiah 28:16). In other words, if you recognize your own sins, ask God's forgiveness, and trust in Christ's death on the cross as the payment for your sins, your life will have a firm foundation. The foundation is Christ, the Son of God. To you Christ becomes a precious corner stone.
But the Bible also says, "To those who disbelieve, the stone which the builders rejected, this became ... a stumbling stone" (1 Peter 2: 7-8). You see, to fail to believe in Christ is to stumble over Him. To you, Christ becomes a stumbling stone. And if you do stumble over Christ, you fall into hell.
