Be Still and Know I am God
Saturday, May 3rd
Do you ever worry about anything? "Why, don't be silly, "you say," I worry and fret and stew over a lot of things. Don't you? I wouldn't be human if I didn't worry, at least now and then.
Well, you're right, at least to a point. Being anxious, concerned, just plain worrying about tomorrow's troubles and needs is very common. But the Bible calls worrying a sin. You see, worry, anxiety and nervous tension are not just the results of being human. Worry is a characteristic of fallen and sinful human beings. Jesus Christ is very plain. He says, "Do not worry" (Matthew 6:25). Now if you reject these words of the Son of God, you are in sin.
But there is a beautiful side to what we are saying. You worry a lot because worrying is a by-product of being human, then there is hope or cure. But, if worrying is a sin, then there is hope. Sin has a cure. The cure is turning to God, receiving forgiveness, and being changed on the inside. Yes, God has the ultimate cure for worry. He says, "I will give you a new heart.... And I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes" (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
If you have the bad habits of wringing your hands because you are worrying a lot, you are probably in need of a new heart. You may be in need of God's Holy Spirit. Turn to God and ask Him for help. You probably also need some instruction from the Bible about how to handle worry.
