Using God's Name

Sunday, May 4th

You've heard interviews on television where occasional beeps occur on the sound track. Profanity is being covered. The producers of the news feel it improper to broadcast the vulgar expletives uttered by those being interviewed. But at the same time, in the same interviews, God's name is taken in vain. In fact, the blasphemous use of God's name is broadcast into homes throughout the nation.

In essence the producers of the news take the following position. It is perfectly acceptable for men and women to use God's name in swearing and cursing. Not only so, it is acceptable to promote the improper use of God's name by broadcasting blaspheme throughout the nation.

But God says, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain" (Exodus 20:7). Yet violations of the Third Commandment abound, not only on the news, but on regular shows, on the playground, in the home, at the office, and in government. The Third Commandment goes on to say, "The Lord will not leave Him unpunished who takes His name in vain." In other words, God will finally punish those who refuse to stop insulting Him by what they say.

If you have the habit of using God's name in vain, you need to turn away from this sin. You need to accept God's provision for forgiveness. You need to turn to God and accept the gift of Christ's death on the cross as the only adequate payment for your sin.
