Mr. and Mrs. Average

Monday, May 5th

What does the average person of today think of himself or herself? Well, the average man or woman probably thinks of himself or herself as having a handle on life, as having it together. This means, for example, that you may honestly feel that you can have a fruitful and productive life and, at the same time, exclude God from your life.

From the perspective of what we are taught, such an attitude is wise. In other words, it is wise to attempt to cope with life on the basis of your own strength. It is wise to face life squarely by using your own resources and your own native ingenuity. When there are successes or even triumphs, who will you congratulate? Why, of course, you will pat yourself on the back. After all, life is a contest. When you make the winning touchdown just before the final gun, you are cheered. You taste victory. This is what it's all about.

But the Bible warns that such an approach to life leads men, women, young people and children down the wrong road. Listen, "They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the creator who is blessed forever" (Romans 1:25). You see, the great lie is that we can and do get along without God. It leads us to turn our backs upon God and to look upon themselves as self sufficient. Isn't it strange? Many people, while accepting this lie, are "professing to be wise" (Romans 1:22).

Now if you consider yourself to be wise in your neglect of God, I challenge you to reverse your course. I challenge you to confess your sin and to turn to the living God, your Creator and your Savior.
